According to Reuters news, on August 25, the Canadian government actually followed other members of the Five Eyes Alliance to ban Huawei 5G, but there are no explicit regulations.
The Five Eyes Alliance (referred to as FVEY) is made up of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have restricted the use of Huawei 5G network equipment by telecom operators on national security grounds. Canada is the only country in the Five Eyes alliance that has not explicitly banned the use of Huawei's network equipment.
Reuters quoted a source as saying that the U.S. Huawei ban has been followed by many countries, and it is only a matter of time before Canadian telecom operators turn to Ericsson or Nokia under cost pressure.
Bell Canada and Telus, two of Canada's largest telecom companies, have abandoned Huawei equipment to build 5G networks, turning to Ericsson and Nokia, respectively.
Early on, Huawei's growth in Canada seemed to show promise, thanks to lobbying backed by the Chinese government. However, as the United Kingdom announced on July 14 that it would ban Huawei from participating in 5G construction and completely remove Huawei equipment from the network by 2027, Canada is the only one in the Five Eyes alliance that has not banned Huawei. As early as August 2018, Australia announced that it would ban Huawei and ZTE from participating in the construction of 5G networks, and in November of the same year, New Zealand also announced that it would ban Huawei from providing technology for the country's next-generation mobile data network.
Charles Burton, a senior fellow at the Canadian Centre for the Promotion of Overseas Interests at MacDonald Laurier College, said in a previous interview that if Canada announced to let Huawei participate in 5G construction, it would appear unique within the Five Eyes alliance. In addition, Canada is also likely to face the threat of the United States stopping intelligence sharing.
